About us

The University of Applied Sciences Potsdam is a young, dynamic University located in the City of Potsdam, close to Berlin in the German Federal State of Brandenburg. The University – or, to use its German name, the Fachhochschule Potsdam (FH Potsdam) – was founded in 1991, one year after German Reunification, and took up its teaching programme immediately.

Today, 32 courses of study offered by the Faculties of Architecture and Urban Design, Civil Engineering, Design, Information Sciences, and Social and Educational Sciences provide a well-grounded university education with strong professional prospects. Some 100 professors, assisted by about 200 lecturers and other staff members, offer teaching for around 3,500 students. These numbers guarantee manageable structures, small working and teaching groups, and a close partnership between teaching staff and students. Nevertheless, research work and co-operative agreements with external partners are also of crucial importance to our University.

Our Hallmark

These close links with regional and international partners enable us to offer our students praxis-oriented study programmes from day one onwards. Interdisciplinary projects give students the opportunity to work with fellow students and teaching staff from other Faculties. Under our guiding principle of “Research-driven Learning”, students can swiftly become acquainted with the methods of applied research. In 2010, this approach received an award from both the Association for the Promotion of Science and Humanities in Germany and the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs. Our University of Applied Sciences Potsdam has been credited with “Excellence in Teaching”, a distinction it shares with only three other universities of applied sciences in all of Germany.
